The Cactus Moon Cafe, a popular nightclub located at the intersection Broadway Boulevard and Craycroft Road, closed its doors unexpectedly on Tuesday.

The cafe at the Williams Centre had until 5 p.m. later that evening to remove their equipment, according to a manager who declined to answer any further questions or give his name. Employees met at the club early Tuesday afternoon as a couple of men took down the KIIM FM 99.5 sign.

The club had been in business at the same location for the past 23 years, according to Mike Harrelson, the radio station’s events manager. Harrelson added that Cactus Moon was the last club of its kind in town.

“It was the largest country bar left in Tucson,” he said. “Right now there’s not a big dance floor in town.”

Until last Friday and Saturday, the country radio station promoted the nightclub’s Friday dinner and drink specials. The club would play country music Friday and Saturday nights and a mix of everything from hip hop to country on Wednesdays.

The nightclub would draw crowds of young adults in on Wednesdays with their ladies’ night dance contest and drink specials. The line outside the club was usually out to the parking lot until after midnight.

Andy Seleznov, director of leasing for Larsen Baker, the company that owns the property, said the business had been having trouble meeting their obligations with rent and “other considerations” for almost a year.

“The business apparently got caught up in the economic recession and was struggling to meet the obligations to the landlord,” Seleznov said.

Seleznov said the leasing company found out when a maintenance person who visited the club regularly advised them that Cactus Moon was moving out. Seleznov said the leasing company is hoping to find a replacement tenant in the near future.
