People in love do stupid things

University of Arizona Police Department officers arrested a UA student for shoplifting from the UofA Bookstore on Monday at 6:34 p.m.

Officers received a call from the bookstore that a student had been caught shoplifting.

When officers arrived to the scene, they spoke to a Loss Prevention employee who saw the student taking the tags off items in the store. Video surveillance also caught the student on tape trying to hide the items on his body.

The student reportedly tried to steal an extra large grey Arizona Dance T-shirt and a small basketball spinner key chain, worth $23.98.

The student admitted that he had intentionally tried to steal the items although he knew it was wrong. He said he wanted to steal the shirt for his girlfriend.

The student was read his rights, cited and released from the scene.

A code of conduct was forwarded to the Dean of Students Office on behalf of the student.

Bad blood

UAPD officers were called to a fraternity house of a reported robbery. Stolen items included a composite photo. The perpetrator also poured paint in the courtyard and set off fire extinguishers inside the house on Wednesday at 3:43 a.m.

When officers arrived, they found several members of the fraternity standing outside of the house.

Once inside, officers noticed that the kitchen and dining room area had been heavily sprayed with fire retardant.

At that point, the Tucson Fire Department arrived to the house and determined that no fire had been set.

While TFD was investigating, officers spoke to the president of the fraternity. He said that the composite photo worth roughly $2,500 had been taken off the wall. Paint was splattered over the grassy area outside and several members had heard someone on the roof earlier that evening but thought nothing of it.

The president also said a rival fraternity has stolen several composites in the past and there was bad blood between the two fraternities.

Although there are no security cameras in the house, officers were asked to check the surveillance cameras around the area.

The fraternity would like to pursue the issue legally but no further legal action has been pursued.

Roommates

A UA student was arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia on Tuesday at 2:59 a.m. in Apache Santa Cruz Residence Hall.

Earlier that evening, the resident assistant on duty called UAPD and reported smelling marijuana coming from one of the dorm rooms on the second floor.

Officers knocked on the door to speak to the student who lived there. The resident who answered the door said his roommate had been smoking weed before the police arrived. However, the roommate was no longer in the room.

Officers noticed the student did not show signs of marijuana use while he was speaking and asked for him to call police when his roommate arrived back in the room.

Checking up on the student’s whereabouts, a UAPD officer later arrived to the dorm room. He knocked but got no response. He called the student who initially opened the door. The student said that he was not in the room but would be shortly.

The student later came back to the room and met the officer. Although he said he did not know if his roommate was inside, he opened the door to let the officer in.

The roommate was found sleeping in his bed and was woken up by the officer. He agreed to a room search. While searching, the officer found a glass pipe, a homemade pipe and a container with marijuana residue.

The student was arrested, cited and released. A code of conduct was also sent on his behalf to the Dean of Student’s Office.
