Women's basketball goes 1-3 on four game road swing
The Arizona women’s basketball team lost its third game in a row by double digits Sunday afternoon, losing to USC in Los Angeles, 74-57.
The Trojans got a quick start in the game and the Wildcats (11-8, 3-5 Pac-12) never led.
The Wildcats shot 28.8 percent from the field and 22.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Trojans had a field goal percentage of 48.1.
However, UA did out-rebound the Trojans 44-34.
Senior guard Davellyn Whyte had 13 points on 5-12 shooting and five assists.
The only other Wildcats in double figures were junior forward Alli Gloyd, who had 11 points and six rebounds, and junior forward Kama Griffitts, who had 10 points and nine rebounds.
“In the first half, we weren’t doing a very good job of taking care of business,” Arizona head coach Niya Butts said. “They had a lot of points in the paint in the first half. In the second half, we came out and played more aggressively, but we need to get back to playing our style, defensively.”
Sophomore guard Layana White was held to zero points on her birthday.
Arizona went 1-3 on its four game road swing to the Rocky Mountain and LA schools. The Wildcats were blown out at USC and Colorado and faltered at the end of a close loss at UCLA.
On Friday, Arizona lost 73-57 to the No. 19 Bruins. Griffitts scored 22, her second-highest total of the season, and Whyte recorded her fourth double double of the season, scoring 17 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.
“We played pretty decent in the first half. At times we made mistakes, but we finished the half strong,” Butts said in a press release. “It was the second half that did us in — I don’t think we had any toughness down the stretch. They kept pounding the ball inside and making plays and we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities.”
Last weekend the UA lost 79-36 at No. 21 Colorado, but beat Utah 62-58 to start the road trip.
The Wildcats return to action Friday night when they host Washington and then play Washington State Sunday afternoon.
