For spring, lighten up on the hair dyes and opt for more natural options

Fashion icon Yves Saint Laurent always claimed that “fashions fade, but style is eternal.” While the clothes are crucial in the making of personal style, hair is of equal importence.

“Hair styles are almost completely reflected by society and politics,” said Marcus Moreno, a hair stylist at Scottsdale’s Salon Boutique. “We can absolutely expect this season to hold a more sleek and disheveled look, almost militant at times.”

Harper’s Bazaar also confirms this trend in its Spring issue, by omitting straight hair from current styles and replacing them with “rock ‘n’ roll waves,” which shoot for the look of straggly and windswept hair. “There is still a huge ‘70s influence — think almost Farrah Fawcett or any type of loose wave that gives your hair movement, which is extremely stylish. Bangs are also a must have this season,” Moreno said. “Ever since the first lady Michelle Obama cut her hair, front bangs have been everywhere.”

This spring holds potential fresh cuts and colors. If you are wearing a hat to the pool to protect your ombre from lightening, stop now.

“This spring has updated the extremely popular hair dying technique, the ombre, and it’s less drastic now,” Moreno said. “Try something that is almost what us hair colorists refer to as a balayage.”

Balayage is simply a more natural attempt at ombre hair coloring. Reference Drew Barrymore’s atrocious coloring last spring and avoid that at all costs. When attending your hair appointment ask for slight balayage, as this coloring technique makes your hair appear more sunkissed, rather than blatantly bleached at the tips.

“Extreme blonde is also going out this season,” Moreno continued. “If your hair is bleached blonde, try adding in some new low lights for a bit more dimension in your hair color.”

If you were planning on keeping a couple dollars in your bank account by not going to a hair dresser, there are also styles for this season’s hair trends that you can try at home.

The hair knot, low ponytail (be sure to keep it low and loose so it looks like it will fall out), and head scarfs are all up-to-date hair styles, and were found on the likes of Alexander Wang, Marc by Marc Jacobs and Chloe runways for this spring’s Fashion Week.

Even better, most of these hair styles require very little work. Be sure to think of hair as being not a pristine accessory, but a relaxed addition to your wardrobe — just like accessorizing however, your hairstyle can make or break your outfit.
