SHREVEPORT, La. — Arizona routed Boston College in the AdvoCare V100 Bowl to finish 8-5 with a bowl win for the second straight season.
The Wildcats set a host of records in the 11th oldest bowl in a 42-19 win.
In what may be his last game at Arizona, junior running back Ka’Deem Carey broke the UA’s all-purpose yardage record. The previous record was 5,392 by Dennis Northcutt.
Freshman receiver Nate Phillips set the UA’s bowl record for receiving yards and the AdvoCare V100/Independence Bowl record with 193 yards on nine catches. He also set the record for most yards in a game by a freshman in school history.
Freshman receiver Trey Griffey caught a three-yard touchdown.
Arizona improved its bowl record to 8-9-1 and has won two straight. The Wildcats have won five of their last seven bowl games.
Carey also rushed for at least 100 yards for the 16th game in a row by gaining 169 yards. This is the 10th time Arizona has won eight or more games since joining what was then the Pac-8 and second in a row.
BC scored its first touchdown with 12 minutes left. It added another with 35 seconds left.
Senior B.J. Denker was 17-for-24 passing for 275 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 51 yards on 14 carries and one score.
Denker scored a touchdown on a 14-yard run to cap an eight play, 93-yard drive, the longest in bowl history.
Carey scored on a five-yard touchdown run on the UA’s first drive of the second half.
Carey won the much-hyped running back battle with BC’s Andre Williams, who won the Doak Walker Award. Carey ran for 169 yards on 27 carries, while Williams ran for 75 yards on 26 carries.
After junior safety Jared Tevis ended BC’s first drive with an interception, Carey rushed for 20 yards on his first carry, but fumbled the ball away.
Carey responded on the next drive, though, with a two-yard touchdown run to cap a four play, 92-yard, 41-second Arizona drive.
Boston College got on the board with a 32-yard field goal. The Eagles would add a 41-yard field goal later in the half.
Immediately after Arizona return man Nate Phillips muffed a BC punt and gave the ball back to the Eagles, sophomore safety William Parks got a 69-yard interception return for a touchdown.
Arizona closed out the half with a 26-yard touchdown catch by freshman receiver Trey Griffey.
Parks and Denker won the most valuable player awards for defense and offense, respectively.
