No. 20 Arizona women’s gymnastics will face Texas Woman’s, BYU and Bridgeport in a quad meet on Saturday in McKale Center and then will travel to Colorado Springs, Colorado to compete against Air Force on Monday.

This Saturday’s meet will be the last home meet of the season and also senior night.

“We are excited for it and it will be a lot of action,” head coach Bill Ryden said. “We obviously want to give a great send off to our three seniors. I think we are pretty focused on making improvements … and continuing moving forward as we continue into the postseason.”

Senior Shana Sangston has put up career numbers this season in both the balance beam and floor.

“Senior night is just another meet, but at the same time it is a big deal to us because it is our last home meet,” Sangston said. “It is very motivational because it makes you look back on everything that you have accomplished and see how far you have come to make you finish off strongly.”

Senior Ali Stakem has made one appearance this season on the uneven bars, while senior Barbara Donaldson has been struggling with an injury all season and has yet to compete.

“It will certainly be the last time in front of the McKale fans and is the beginning of the end to a career that sometimes spans 16 to 17 years,” Ryden said. “It’s very emotional and the start of the transition for them from being an athlete to a ‘normal’ as we call them.”

The Gymcats are coming off a tough loss against then-No. 15 Oregon State last Sunday and will look to bounce back in both of their upcoming meets.

“I think that coming off a couple of losses and a couple of disappointments that we have a lot of momentum going into this meet, so hopefully it turns out well,” freshman Gabby Laub said.

Ryden described the upcoming meets as a “wild weekend” and will be the first back-to-back meets that the Gymcats have done in a while.

“We have been talking about just staying focused and taking every routine skill by skill and doing our best to hit that routine in that moment of time and not worrying about anything else,” Sangston said.
