Arizona men’s golf finished third at the Annual Thunderbird Invitational at ASU’s Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., over the weekend.

The Wildcats shot 289 (plus 5) on Sunday to move up from fourth to third place and score a 847 (-5) overall.

“We are improving as a team, and this week was evidence of that,” head coach Jim Anderson said in a press release. “We didn’t have our best day, which left a sour taste with our guys. That said, we showed up without playing our ‘A’ game and finished in third. We know when we get the whole team going, we can play with some very good teams.”

The host, ASU, won, shooting 817 (-35).

Junior Alex McMahon led the UA with a total score of 200 (-13), good enough for second. He shot a 62 in the second round, his lowest round of his career, and his 200 was a career best.

“Alex really carried us this week,” Anderson said. “He was definitely executing and had a very good game plan going in. I know his week will give him even more confidence, and our guys know they can do it too.”

Senior Erik Oja shot 211 (-2) to tie for 13th place overall, and sophomore Kolton Lapa shot 218 (plus 5) to finish in 37th.

Up next for Arizona is the Redhawk Invitational in University Place, Wash., on April 7.
