    Police Beat: September 10

    Hut, hut! Heave?

On Aug. 30, an 18-year-old male student was admitted into the intensive care unit at the University of Arizona Medical Center for extreme intoxication.

UA police officers responded to Colonia de La Paz Residence Hall at 12:40 a.m. where a student was unresponsive on the sidewalk. He was on his side and had recently vomited. Another individual from the residence hall held the student’s head steady to prevent him from rolling into his own vomit.

An individual approached the police officer and identified himself as the unresponsive student’s roommate and that the student in question had taken part in “pre-gaming” drinking; the student took shots of Jack Daniel’s whiskey prior to the football game that evening. The individual said the male student was responsive during the game and didn’t have any issues.

While returning to their room after the game, the student continued to drink whiskey. His roommate continued to tell police that the student wanted to go for a walk. When he began stumbling, the roommate attempted to take him back to their room where he began vomiting.

A residence assistant from Arizona-Sonora Residence Hall saw what was occurring and called the Tucson Fire Department.
The student was issued a student diversion for underage drinking, and his roommate said he would inform the student upon his release from UAMC.

    Textbooks hold ’em

On Aug. 26, a UAPD officer responded to a report of shoplifting from the UA Bookstore.

Upon arrival, the officer met with the loss prevention staff who directed the officer to the individual they apprehended. The officer read the individual his Miranda rights, and the individual agreed to answer the officer’s questions.

The individual told the officer he had stolen some books. The individual said he placed three books into his backpack, paid for several others and proceeded to leave the store, claiming that he couldn’t afford to pay for all the books he needed for school.

The loss prevention staff said the incident was caught on camera, and the individual was advised not to return to the bookstore or he could be arrested for trespassing.

    Schwasted in the stadium

On Aug. 26, a UAPD officer, who was doing a security check at Park Avenue Parking Garage, noticed a male student in the southwestern stairwell.

The male was leaning his head against the handrail and appeared to be sleeping. When the patrol vehicle neared the man, he rose his head and quickly walked up the ramp. The officer noted that his pants were torn at the crotch.

The officer asked the individual if he was OK, and the student said that he was just drunk and was having a hard time finding his way out of the stadium. His speech was slurred, his breath smelled of intoxicants and he was unsteady on his feet.

The officer asked for the individual’s identification and discovered he was 19 years old. The individual was unable to identify who gave him the alcohol. He was transported to his residence hall where his resident assistant met with the officer and the individual, and they escorted him to his room.

The individual was informed he would be diverted to the Dean of Students Office and a referral form was completed.
