Police Beat: September 15

Getting rowdy

A UA student was arrested on charges of being underage with liquor in body last Saturday.

A University of Arizona Police Department officer responded to the Sigma Kappa sorority in reference to a fight around 12:33 p.m.

There was a date dash event going on that day, and some men who were in attendance were trying fight with Wild West security, who was hired for the event.

When the UAPD officer arrived on the scene, security members pointed toward a big yellow school bus — on First Street, west of Cherry Avenue — and said there was a male student that needed to be escorted off.

A student began walking down the bus stairs, and the security team identified him as the person who was trying to start fights. The student verbally identified himself to the officer but did not cooperate. He was very argumentative and continually interrupted the officer.

The officer noticed the student was very unstable on his feet, stumbled as he walked, swayed side-to-side, had slurred speech and had bloodshot eyes. However, the student denied having had anything to drink.

A man on the security team said it was policy to deny access on the bus to anyone who seems to be under the influence. He added the student pretended to walk away, proceeded to get on the bus and was escorted off again. The security member said the student had struck him in his back near his spinal area.

The student was forwarded to the Dean of Student Office and was arrested on charges of being underage with liquor in body.

Don’t forget to pay

On Sept. 8, a UA student was cited and released for shoplifting.

A UAPD officer responded to the UA Bookstore to reference a shoplifting incident.

Upon arrival, a bookstore security employee said that he saw a man put a windbreaker jacket on, pick up a shirt and walk to the cashier. He stated the student tucked the price tag of the jacket under the collar so it could not be seen, but still paid for the shirt.

The officer made contact with the student and read him his Miranda rights, which he stated he understood. The student told the officer he entered the store at about 10 a.m. to buy a shirt and jacket because of the rain. He said he put the jacket on to make sure it fit over his backpack. He added that he wanted to buy a shirt as well and continued to shop without taking off the jacket to make sure it fit well. When he went to pay for the shirt, he said he forgot he was wearing the jacket.

The student added that he realized that he hadn’t paid for the jacket when a friend yanked on the price tag. He said he went back to go pay for it, but bookstore security was already waiting for him. The student was cited and released for shoplifting. He was ordered to stay away from UA BookStores until the Dean of Students Office said otherwise.
