From “ASU students deserve reliable notification of serious crimes”

Something about a chlorine leak at the Engineering Research Center, and a note informing that class was in session despite apocalyptic rain, right?

If you think these were the most important happenings on campus to be made aware of in the past few weeks, you’ve been let down.

… [No] reliable message was sent to the students that a violent, horrific crime was under investigation. If we can be inundated with warnings of gas leaks and bee swarms, shouldn’t we be informed of the presence of a dangerous perpetrator of violence? If so, then don’t we deserve a medium that is actually accessible for students?

… We can speculate that University officials don’t want students to feel barraged with messages that can make some feel like their campus is a treacherous place rife with sexual assault around every corner.

… But we need to know.

From “Stanford’s Engaging Diversity requirement needs to be strengthened”

Once the Class of 2016 graduates, Stanford’s transition to Ways of Thinking/Ways of Doing general education requirements will be complete. … [However], the new regime is only somewhat better, for one reason: A Stanford student can still earn a diploma without engaging meaningfully with the ways in which race, class, gender and sexual orientation shape the modern world.

… [If] students wish to gain an honest and well-rounded liberal arts education, one in which multiple perspectives are thoughtfully and equitably explored, their education should include history, literature and philosophy classes offered through feminist, gender and sexuality studies, African and African-American studies, comparative studies in race and ethnicity and other departments that emphasize the study of race, class and gender.
