Family Weekend: Colleges open doors to families for weekend

UA schools and colleges are holding special events for families who come down to Tucson for Family Weekend. The School of Journalism is one of the schools holding an event for Family Weekend.

Kathleen Harrison, senior program coordinator for the School of Journalism, said that an open house of the school is going to be conducted on Saturday for journalism students and their parents. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to noon.

“We will have presentations by our director, professor David Cuillier, professor Terry Wimmer, who will discuss school media; journalism major Amer Taleb, who will talk about his experiences and internships; journalism major Jacquelyn Abad, who will talk about work on Arizona Cat’s Eye — our video news capstone course — and Paloma Boykin, our academic adviser, will offer advice on how to be successful at the UA,” Harrison said.

Harrison will conduct the tours of the school and said it is likely other faculty members will be on hand.

In addition to the School of Journalism open house, the Honors College will also host a variety of events.

Among these are the New Student Convocation and a presentation from speaker Wes Moore.

Diana Peel, Honors College events coordinator, said the New Student Convocation is essentially a ceremony to induct new students into the Honors College’s 52nd class.

Moore will be speaking and signing his book, “The Other Wes Moore: One Name, Two Fates,” which was the common reading book for the year. This will be followed by refreshments, music and the chance to meet Moore.

The events will be occurring in conjunction with one another on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Among the colleges, most will simply have their honors convocation rather than a public event.

Liz Warren-Pederson, director of marketing and communications for the Eller College of Management, said the college will not be holding any public events during Family Weekend. Rather, it will only have its invite-only honors convocation for students and their parents.

However, the College of Fine Arts has several shows it will perform during Family Weekend, although they are not specific to the occasion.

Other events are department-sponsored, such as the National Day on Writing the department of English is sponsoring on Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in front of the Administration building. Another event is Stargazing at Steward from 7 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. on Friday, sponsored by the department of astronomy.
