Arizona volleyball earned a split in the Bay Area over the weekend, pushing No. 1 Stanford to five sets before sweeping California.

On Friday, No. 16 Arizona lost at Stanford 25-20, 23-25, 25-16, 22-25, 15-9. Then on Sunday, the Wildcats swept California 25-19, 25-19, 25-11.

Outside hitter Taylor Arizobal had a season-high 17 kills on 25 swings and .600 hitting percentage.

“Good win for us on the road,” Arizona volleyball head coach Dave Rubio said in a press release. “I thought [libero] Ronni [Lewis] had a breakout match today. Statistically, it probably doesn’t show up, but she did a lot of really good things for us [Sunday].”

Outside hitter Madi Kingdon had 19 kills, 17 digs and 22 points in the three sets at Cal.

“Madi and Taylor had really good matches,” Rubio said. “Really good weekend for us. I thought we really took a big step forward with a couple of good matches.”

Lewis and setter Penina Snuka had 15 digs each as the Wildcats out-dug the Golden Bears 64-43. Arizona held Cal to .183 hitting.

Arizona’s road sweep is its third of the conference season after only one in 2012 and 2013 combined.

On Friday at Stanford, Arizona rallied in the fourth set to force the winner-take-all and had a historic night.

Kingdon had 25 kills and a career-high 30 digs. She was the seventh Wildcat ever to tally 30 digs.

The Wildcats had 106 digs, the seventh-most in school history and three short of a season high.

After Arizona and Stanford split the first two sets, 25-20 for Stanford and 25-23 for the UA, the Cardinal won the third 25-16 and was leading the fourth 14-7.

However, Arizona went on an 11-2 run to take a 17-16 lead and ultimately won 25-22.

Stanford won the last set 15-9, though.

While Arizona just hit .140, Arizobal had 13 kills, eight of which were in the second set.

After the Wildcats lost to the Cardinal 3-1 in Tucson on Oct. 10, Arizona’s first home loss of the season, they played Stanford very close. The two teams were even after the match’s first 38 points.

Up next for Arizona is No. 11 Oregon at home on Thursday.
