Near hit and run

A University of Arizona Police Department officer was dispatched to the traffic circle at 822 E. Fifth St. in regards to a reckless driver on Jan. 26.

The officer made contact with the reporting party who said that the driver nearly ran him over. When he tried to take pictures of the vehicle’s license plate, the driver noticed and hastily reversed in an attempt to hit him.

The man said that if he hadn’t jumped out of the way, the car would have struck him.

Two taxi drivers reported witnessing the driver almost hit the man.

Shortly after, dispatch information said that a fight had been occurring at Mama’s Hawaiian Bar-B-Cue on Speedway Boulevard and Tyndall Avenue, and the supposed reckless driver was involved in the fight.

When the officer made contact with the driver, the driver said that he was simply backing out of his parking spot near Coronado Residence Hall. He said that he noticed someone attempting to take pictures of his license plate and decided to leave because the group of taxi drivers in that area had been hassling him all day.

The driver said he was not trying to hit anyone and was simply trying to leave the area.

The investigation failed to establish reckless driving and the attempt the strike the reporting party.

Late night blues

On Jan. 24 around 7 p.m., a UAPD officer stopped three students after he observed two of them attempting to hold up another student who seemed impaired.

The two students were supporting another student, who appeared to have difficulty walking. The officer asked the student if she was OK, and they said she was. However, from nearly five feet away, the officer could smell alcohol on their breaths.

The officer asked them if they were all of legal age, and they all said they were not.

One of the students told the officer they had been drinking at The Retreat earlier that day.

The student had the smell of intoxicants on his breath and red, bloodshot, watery eyes.

The other student who was having difficulty walking began speaking with the officer but was having mood swings between anger and sadness.

She also had the smell of alcohol on her breath and was becoming increasingly upset at the officer while he was asking her questions; she told him to just give her a ticket because that was all he could do.

The officer said that he was unable to successfully ask her questions because she would begin crying every time he did.

The student said she had only had four shots and some rum.

One student was cited and released on the scene for underage drinking. The student who had to be supported was diverted to the Dean of Students Office, and the final student had a Student Code of Conduct sent to the Dean of Students Office.

The officer said that all three students expressed their dissatisfaction and yelled obscenities as they left.
