Arizona men’s basketball garners awards and accolades

Arizona guard T.J. McConnell triumphantly walks off the court for the last time in his college basketball career at the end of Arizona’s 91-69 victory over Stanford in McKale Center on Saturday.

On Monday, the Pac-12 conference announced several Arizona Wildcats garnered awards and accolades. Stanley Johnson was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Year and to the All-Pac-12 First Team, Rondae
Hollis-Jefferson and T.J. McConnell were named to the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team
and to the All-Pac-12 First Team, and Brandon Ashley was named to the
All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention.

Johnson is the second straight Wildcat to be named the
Pac-12 Freshman of the Year, as Aaron Gordon won the award last season, and was
also named as one of five finalists for the inaugural Julius Erving Small
Forward of the Year Award.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced on
Monday that McConnell was also named as one of five finalists for the Bob Cousy
Point Guard of the Year Award.

During his freshman season, Johnson leads the Wildcats in
scoring at 13.9 points per game and rebounding at 6.6 rebounds per game and has
started 30 of the 31 regular season games.

McConnell concluded his regular season Arizona career by
registering a 10 point, 11 rebound double-double against Stanford on Saturday.
The fifth year season is fourth on the team with 9.6 points per game, first in
assists at 6.3 assists per game and fifth in rebounds with 3.8 rebounds per
game.

Hollis-Jefferson finished his second season at Arizona by finishing
third on the team in scoring at 11.2 points per game and second on the team in
rebounding at 6.5 rebounds per game. The sophomore is one of the most versatile
defenders in the nation and started 18 out of 31 games this season.
