Cold season … we all tried to escape it, but in college it seems like it is inevitable that we will catch some kind of bug this season. The worst part about getting sick in college is that being a complete baby, having your mom there to make soup and take care of you, and missing a few days of school isn’t always feasible anymore.

Luckily for you, the Daily Wildcat has gathered a few recipes that will help you get over different types of colds.

    Miracle Slushie

For that sore throat that never seems to completely go away, this Kitchen Girl recipe helps relieve a sore throat while avoiding unnecessary sugar and help. It’s a great way to stay hydrated when you’re sick.

    What you will need:

2 or 3-inch piece of fresh ginger (make sure it’s washed and not peeled. Cut in half pieces.)

    4 cups filtered water

    1 lemon, freshly juiced

    ¼ cup raw honey

    4 cups ice cubes

    Directions:

    1. Take the ginger and water and bring to a boil in a saucepan for a few minutes. Turn down the heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes. (The longer it sits, the stronger it becomes).

    2. Take off the heat source and remove and dispose of the ginger.

    3. Add lemon and raw honey (make sure water is below 140 F for the honey to be useful).

    4. Let it cool to room temperature.

    5. After it is cooled, toss it in the blender with the ice cubes to make a slushie (add more ice cubes as needed).

    Homemade Honey Garlic Syrup

If allergy season is getting the best of you or you’re suffering from a horrible cough, this is an easy home remedy to help soothe your pain. This The Crunchy Chronicles syrup contains garlic, which has allicin, manganese, vitamin C and vitamin B6 to help your body fight off infections. The honey is used to fight seasonal allergies by building up the immune system.

    What you will need:

    6 cloves garlic

    1 cup local honey

    Directions:

    1. Finely chop the garlic.

    2. In a saucepan over low heat, simmer the garlic and honey for about 1 minute.

    3. Take off the heat and let it cool.

    4. Once it’s cool, put it in a sealed container and keep refrigerated.

    How to use it:

Use to prevent allergies by taking a tablespoon once or twice a day. To treat a virus, cough, strep throat, etc., take 1 teaspoon every 1-2 hours.

    Soothing Lemon Ginger Drink

For people dealing with that deathly — or what feels deathly, anyway — cold and flu, here is a fun and easy recipe to help you recover. This Keeper of the Home drink adapted from “Medical Herbs: A Beginner’s Guide” includes ginger, which naturally warms the body to help clear congestion, and lemon to help break a fever and soothe a sore throat.

    What you will need:

4 tablespoons ginger root, freshly grated

    1-2 lemons, freshly squeezed

    1 quart of water

Honey (to add a little natural sweetener)

    Directions:

    1. Mix the quart of water and ginger in a saucepan.

    2. Put on medium heat and cover the saucepan with a lid until it comes to a boil.

    3. Remove from heat and then let sit for 10-15 minutes (leave the lid on).

    4. Juice the lemons.

    5. Strain the ginger and catch the water in a clean jar or bowl.

    6. Add the lemon juice and stir it.

    7. Add the honey.

Sip on this juice throughout the day. It can be stored in the fridge for up to 3 days.
