Linebacker Scooby Wright III (33) exits the field after a defensive play on Saturday, Sept. 26.

The long and anticipated wait for the phone call that would determine the future for former Arizona All-American linebacker Scooby Wright III ended at the 250th overall pick in the 7th round when he was selected by the Cleveland Browns.

Wright was expected to be selected anywhere from the 3rd to 6th round and from the moment the final day started, Wright was one of the best talent remaining on the board.

Essentially, it would only be a matter of time before a team rolled the dice with him.

Granted, there were a scarce number of red flags such as Wright coming off the lateral meniscus tear and sprained foot he suffered last season, so most of his exposure to NFL scouts was from the 2014 season as well as the exclamation performance in the 2015 Gildan New Mexico Bowl.

Wright also ran a 4.90 in the 40-yard dash as a linebacker in the NFL draft combine back in February.

Plus, Wright’s 6-foot stature automatically made him unattractive from the get-go so it was just a matter of a team taking a gamble on him and how he would fit well in the scheme.

Wright falling in the draft is also the best representation of how he molded into the tireless linebacker he is today.

The former two-star recruit only had one division-one offer coming out of high school and that was from Arizona head coach Rich Rodriguez.

Now, his only chance for stardom at the NFL starts in Cleveland.
