With football season kicking off next week in Phoenix, Wildcat fans were given a taste of this upcoming season last night during the Beanie Bowl, a UA football scrimmage.

The scrimmage was played at Arizona Stadium and gave fans a chance to see who is who for this year’s team.

At 6:15 p.m., freshman and new fans were brought up to speed about the intricacies of being a fan and how the Zona Zoo operated. Those with an interest in football and other Arizona athletics were encouraged to buy a Zona Zoo pass so they could support the Wildcats in all aspects.

“What makes college sports so special is the student section, and nobody brings it better than Zona Zoo,” said Athletic Director, Greg Byrne. Arizona football Head Coach Rich Rodriguez echoed his statement by calling the Zoo the number one student section in the U.S.

Then at 7 p.m., the Wildcats took the field to show a tiny bit of what to expect this season. If games are full course meals, the Beanie Bowl was an appetizer that holds us over until game time comes. However, those who came to this appetizer were treated to a voucher for free Raising Canes.

Game wise, very little of interest occurred so this game was the equivalent of an NFL preseason match. One noteworthy thing at the match was quarterback Anu Solomon taking the first team reps over Brandon Dawkins. Solomon is the more experienced quarterback of the two and might be the more consistent one. Dawkins at this moment becomes a de facto sparkplug like Jerrard Randall last year. If Solomon is plagued with injuries, inconsistency, or interceptions, Dawkins could be brought in to give the offense a boost.

While this glorified scrimmage might not have had the excitement of a game, Wildcat football is one week away. In just one week, we all will have an opportunity to see what this year’s team is capable of against the BYU Cougars.

Student tickets can be purchased for $20 at the ASUA Office on the third floor of the Student Union Memorial Center. Bus transportation for the game is also available for $5 but you must show proof of purchase.
