Katelyn Hilde and Aaron Varela walked away victorious from yesterday’s Associated Students of the University of Arizona special election to fill the two vacant senate seats left unfilled after two senators quit earlier this semester.
Hilde ran unopposed for the College of Public Health’s representative position and Varela narrowly won the last open at-large representative seat.
Six candidates vied for the at-large seat and Varela won by just a 1.04 percent margin, or just 10 votes, over runner-up Stefano Saltalamacchia.
Saltalamacchia ran for the Executive Vice Presidency last spring but lost the highly controversial race to Trey Cox following an appeal process and second special election for the EVP seat.
