If you’re looking to enjoy what Tucson has to offer this summer — and beat the heat in the process — you’re in luck! The Wildcat Picks of the Week have arrived. For entertainment combined with relief from summer temperatures, take advantage of these upcoming events.

Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Tucson Botanical Garden

Get a sense of the natural surroundings that inspired the famous Mexican artist and feminist icon.

In an exhibit titled “Art, Garden, Life,” the natural surroundings that often served as inspiration for painter Frida Kahlo are reflected in an intricate garden landscape nestled inside the Tucson Botanical Gardens. The natural exhibit is a replica of the gardens that Kahlo maintained at her home, La Casa Azul, in Mexico City. Designed by the renowned New York Botanical Gardens, this exclusive exhibit has been extended to August 31. “Art, Garden, Life” is open all week from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Regular tickets are $9; tickets for students, seniors and military members are $8.

Summer Oasis series at the Tucson Botanical Gardens

Take advantage of one of the rare opportunities for dogs and their owners to enjoy the botanical gardens together.

Tucson Botanical Garden’s Summer Oasis includes summer classes, evening hours on Thursdays and Fridays, and even Dog Days for canine companions. Come for one of the many classes offered, view the surrounding botanical brilliance in the evening, or just relax and enjoy the gardens with your pup, admission for leashed dogs is $3. The gardens have special summer hours from 5-8 pm every week for Twilight Thursday and Frida Friday. Evening guests can even wine and dine with a reservation at Café Botanica.

Cinema La Placita at the Tucson Museum of Art

Enjoy a blast from the past with a free screening of a classic film, courtesy of Cinema La Placita.

Every Thursday evening, local residents participate in the 18-year-old tradition of watching classic films shown in the beautiful downtown plaza of the Tucson Museum of Art. For only $3, Cinema La Placita even provides popcorn to enjoy during the movie. This week’s screening on Thursday June 15 is the classic 1979 film “Being There,” a film in which a gardener becomes a trusted adviser to a politician.

Dash for Dad 5K Run

This Father’s Day weekend, bring your dad to this 5k and break a sweat for a good cause.

Add some exercise to your Father’s Day agenda by breaking a sweat in the Dash for Dad 5K run on Saturday, June 17. For $25 you can register and run or walk around the Rillito River path on The Loop in honor of dads. This year’s beneficiaries of the event are the Natural Resources Defense Council and World Without Hate.

Cool Summer Nights at the Sonoran Desert Museum

Enjoy the biological wonder of these creatures of the night.

The Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum is hosting a new event called Cool Summer Nights for audiences of all ages. This Saturday, June 17, the creatures of the night come out to play. Observe live animal interpretations on the grounds, interact with the museum’s animated animals, and watch the popular Desert Survivors show. Admission for Arizona residents is $15.50 with I.D. (otherwise general admission is $20.50).
