Arizona soccer wraps up the regular season with a win over ASU
The Arizona soccer team huddles before their game against USC on Oct. 5.
The Wildcats made history winning their seventh conference game of the season at the expense of their in-state rival the ASU Sun Devils with goals by Hannah Clifford and Amanda Porter giving the ‘Cats a 2-1 victory at Mulcahy Stadium.
The setting was electric as what you would expect when these two programs clash against one another in any sport as they did Thursday evening in front of 1081 fans in attendance. Both the Wildcats and Sun Devils were well represented by their loyal fan base.
The ‘Cats would get on the board first in the 37’ when a shot from forward Charlotte Brascia bounced off ASU keeper Nikki Panas right to Clifford who was in the right place at the right time putting the rebound in the back of the net giving the ‘Cats an early 1-0 lead.
“Super excited just to take the lead,” Clifford said.
The Sun Devils unconventional 3-4-2-1 formation would find the equalizer in the 67’ of the second half after freshman Jazmarie Mader from 18-yards out got a shot to sail over the leaping Arizona keeper Lainey Burdett.
“I told our team on the sideline ‘she struck a great goal, we’re fine, stay calm and keep doing what we’re doing the goal will come,’ that’s how it played out,” Arizona head coach Tony Amato said.
The Wildcats would strike back seven minutes later in the 74’ when a through ball from Gabi Stoian found Porter who was able to get the ball to ricochet off a diving Panas.
“The goalie was cheating a little bit so, I thought I would try and catch her off guard and just get on frame and luckily she tapped it in for me,” Porter said.
The ‘Cats close out the regular season with a 7-2-2 conference record and 10-4-4 overall. A lot is still to be determined as they will wait patiently to see how the scheduling of the tournament will pan out.
“It’s totally up in the air,” Amato said. “I would think we’re going to host it just matters what happens with the other teams.”
As for how players plan to take advantage of their off days?
“Rest,” Brascia said.
