The Office of University of Arizona Global Initiatives and the Center for English as a Second Language are co-hosting the Global Excellence Awards Reception, where three community members will be awarded for their support and contributions to global service and education

The event will take place Thursday, Nov. 16, from 4:00–6:30 p.m. on the rooftop of the Environmental and Natural Resources 2 Building.

Jenny J. Lee, a professor in the Center for Higher Education, will be awarded with the Excellence in Global Education Award for her work with international students.

Ricardo Pineda Albarran, ambassador for the Consul of Mexico in Tucson, will be the recipient of the Excellence in Global Service Award for his service work in the community for human rights.

Jenna A. Altherr Flores, a Ph.D. candidate in the Second Language Acquisition & Teaching program, will be presented with the Student Award for Global Excellence.

Frank Camp, director of marketing for the Office of Global Initiatives, said the event helps showcase the global impact people of the UA community have.

“We have researchers and students and others that are doing really profound, really substantive, really impactful research and programs all over the world and this is kind of a small way that we can highlight that work,” he said.

Camp also noted the underappreciated, but very real, presence of international students at the UA. “There are a lot of people here [who] don’t know 10 percent of our campus population is international … one out of every 10 people you walk by on this campus is international.”

The Global Excellence Reception takes place during International Student Week, an initiative to promote cultural heritage, which spans from Nov. 13–17.

Throughout the week, there are other activities around campus, such as an International Students Got Talent show and a Passport to Dance, which is a multicultural dance class series.
