Arizona beach volleyball completed its season sweep against its in-state rivals, Arizona State, this evening in its final road trip of the regular season, after defeating the Sun Devils by a score of 3-2 in Tempe, Arizona.

The Sand Cats’ down-to-the-wire win against Arizona State was spearheaded by the two-set sweep by the No. 3 pair Stephany Purdue and Hailey Devlin. The experienced senior Wildcat tandem defeated Arizona State’s Katelyn Carballo and Ellyson Lundberg 21-15 in the first set and 21-18 in the second set.

Sophomore Olivia Hallaran returned to the lineup this evening after an undisclosed injury to play with her partner-in-crime, Kacey Nady. Hallaran and Nady defeated ASU’s Natalie Braun and Frances Giedraitis in a close three-set match. The sophomore-senior duo defeated the Sun Devil duo 26-24 in the first set, dropped the second set 14-21 but came back to win the third set by a score of 15-10.

Arizona’s No. 1 pair, Olivia Macdonald and Natalie Anselmo, defeated Kwyn Johnson and Mia Rivera after dropping the first set 19-21. Macdonald and Anselmo came back to win the second set 21-15 and 15-11 in the final set.

The No. 5 pair for the Wildcats, Brooke Burling and Jonny Baham, saw its first loss in a while after dropping a three-set match to Samantha Plaster and Kate Baldwin (21-17, 18-21, 10-15). With her loss tonight, freshman Baham picks up only her sixth individual loss on the entire season.

Arizona’s No. 4 pair, Caroline Cordes and Makenna Martin, dropped its match against Cierra Flood and Katie Cross in two-sets (18-21 and 15-21). With Cordes and Martin dropping their match tonight, the Sun Devils were able to pick up their second point on the night.

With its 3-2 win against the Sun Devils tonight, Arizona beach volleyball improves to 17-10 on the season before heading back to Tucson to host the Bear Down Bash on Friday, April 20.

The ‘Cats are back in action this Friday at noon against the New Mexico Lobos and again at 6 p.m. against the Utah Utes.
