Softball beats GCU twice in Saturday doubleheader
Arizona softball kicked off its last regular season series at Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium with a doubleheader against Grand Canyon University. The No. 10 ranked ‘Cats won both games, but in two completely different styles.
In a tightly contested game one, the Wildcats came out victorious, 1-0.
The lone scoring play of the day came in the bottom of the fifth, when sophomore Malia Martinez led off the frame with a solo home run, her fourth homer of the season.
Junior Taylor McQuillin pitched the whole game and allowed only three hits in her shutout effort, while striking out seven.
In game two the Wildcats had their own personal home run derby and won, 9-0, on a walk off home run from Jenna Kean, the first home run of her career, in the bottom of the sixth.
Alyssa Denham took the mound for Arizona and pitched the whole game, allowing four hits, striking out fifth in her own shutout performance.
The ‘Cats didn’t waste much time getting the offense going, as they put up three runs in the bottom of the second with RBI’s from Malia Martinez and Dejah Mulipola, and a solo home run from Jessie Harper, her 16th of the season and also a Pac-12 best.
In the bottom of the third, Alyssa Palomino tied Harper at the top of the Pac-12 home runs list with her 16th, a solo shot into right that went off of the right fielder’s glove and over the wall.
Then, in the bottom of the fourth, Palomino cranked her 17th home run, this time a two run shot over the center field wall. Not to be outdone, Harper, batting right after Palomino, hit her second solo shot of the day to tie Palomino once again, putting the ‘Cats up 7-0.
The Wildcats will play their final regular season game in Rita Hillenbrand Memorial Stadium’s history on Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
