One of Guillermo del Toro’s most personal films, The Devil’s Backbone is also among his most frightening and emotionally complex. This stylish and unpredictable supernatural chiller is set during the final week of the Spanish Civil War, and tells the tale of a young boy named Carlos, who, after his freedom-fighting father is killed, is sent to a foreboding rural orphanage filled with terrible secrets.
