    Police Beat: Sept. 16

    Next time, try the stairs

A University of Arizona Police Department officer responded to a call on Tuesday about a man sleeping in an elevator at the Manuel T. Pacheco Integrated Learning Center. The officer opened the elevator and found a man apparently asleep on the floor. The officer woke him up and the man exited the elevator and sat on a bench. The officer conducted a records check of the man and found that he had been warned by UAPD before about sleeping on a bench in the ILC. He had previously come into contact with the Tucson Police Department for trespassing and was no longer allowed in various locations around Tucson. The officer cited the man for loitering in or about a school and explained his court date to him. The man said he would be in California by the time his court date arrived so it didn’t matter. The officer then placed the man in handcuffs and booked him into Pima County Jail. The man received a one-year exclusionary order from UAPD.

Sharing is caring, sometimes too much

A UAPD officer spoke to a professor on Tuesday who reported he had loaned a book to a student and it was never returned. The man said he had loaned his personal copy of “The Grammatical Structures of English and Spanish” to a student in February. He told the student he wanted his book back in a timely manner. After six months, the professor asked the student for his book back and the student said he would give it back soon. The professor has still not received the book. The professor said he did not wish to press charges, but only wanted his book returned. The book is valued at $32.50. The officer attempted to contact the student, but was only able to leave him a message on his cellphone. There is no further information.

PCard perpetrator pumps up the jam

A UAPD officer responded to the UA Poetry Center on Saturday to speak with an employee who had reported several fraudulent purchases had been made with her UA-issued purchasing card. The employee said Chase Bank had contacted her about several charges made to the Apple iTunes online store. The total amount of the purchases was $151.97. The bank advised her that other purchases may have been made as well, but they were not yet posted on the transaction history. There is no further information at this time.

    Where the Green Gas goes

A UAPD officer went to Cochise Residence Hall around 11 p.m. on Tuesday in response to a report of a resident who had a weapon in his room. The officer met with a witness who said that the resident had a pistol with a silencer in his room. The witness said he believed it was a Green Gas BB gun and that the resident kept it in his bed. The officer went to the room and asked the resident of he had a weapon of any kind in his room, including pellet guns. He said he did not and consented to a search of his side of the room. The officer pulled the covers off the bed and found a replica Heckler and Koch pistol with a silencer as well as two cans of Green Gas propellant. The resident admitted the items were his and said he knew he was not supposed to have the pistol on campus. He said he intended to take it to a friend’s house, but he was unable to get there because he did not have a car. No other contraband was found in the room. The pistol and propellant were placed into evidence and a Code of Conduct violation form was completed for the student.
