University of Arizona Police Department officers were dispatched to the Student Union Memorial Center in reference to a reported theft on Nov. 4 at 4:55 p.m.

Upon arrival, officers met with a woman who claimed that sometime around 3:30 p.m. her purple clutch was taken from a table at the student union. The woman claimed that her table was situated near a trash bin.

When she was done eating lunch, she got up to throw her trash away and left her purse unattended on the table. When she returned, the purse was gone.

According to the woman, the purse contained a digital camera, cell phone, CatCard, and miscellaneous credit and debit cards and keys. The woman was advised to notify her financial institutions and the CatCard office of the stolen items.

    Spontaneous vehicle combustion

UAPD officers responded to the Kaibab-Huachuca Residence Hall on Nov. 4 at 7:42 p.m. in reference to a report of a vehicle fire.

Officers arrived on scene at the same time as the Tucson Fire Department firefighters.

Officers observed a smoldering vehicle in the parking lot directly north of the dorm. TFD firefighters broke the passenger window out of the vehicle and extinguished the fire. TFD informed UAPD that the likely cause of the fire was a faulty electrical switch in the driver’s door.

Officers contacted the owner of the vehicle and informed the owner of the incident.

The vehicle was towed and deemed a total loss, with an estimated value of $4,000. No injuries were reported.

Traffic stop leads to citation for suspended license

UAPD were in the area of Euclid Avenue and Speedway Boulevard on Nov. 4 at 10:37 p.m. when they observed a Toyota Camry operating with a partially obscured Arizona license plate.

Officers initiated a traffic stop at Helen Street and Euclid Avenue and informed the driver of the reason for the stop. The driver was identified with an Arizona driver’s license. A records check revealed a flag for involvement in suspected gang activity and a suspended driver’s license. The driver was placed under arrest for driving on a suspended license. The vehicle was towed for a mandatory 30-day impound and the driver was released on scene.

Get the second pair of handcuffs

UAPD officers were on Second Street on Nov. 6 at approximately 12:16 a.m. when they observed a man who appeared to be intoxicated.

According to police, the man appeared to be having trouble crossing the street.

When he observed officers approaching, he climbed over a brick wall and entered the backyard of a residence. Police knocked on the door of the home and informed the residents of the situation. The homeowners granted police access to the backyard, where they found the man sitting on a chair in a corner behind a shed.

Police ordered the man to come out from his hiding spot and he complied. Due to the man’s size, police had to use two pairs of handcuffs to comfortably detain the man. The man was identified using his Arizona driver’s license.

Officers noticed the strong odor of intoxicants coming from the man’s mouth as he spoke. They also observed that he had bloodshot eyes and was perspiring and breathing heavily.

Police asked the owners of the residence if they wished to press charges, and they stated that they did. Police cited the man on charges of minor in possession and criminal trespassing. He was transported to Pima County Jail where he was booked.

Creeper canvasses campus, follows former flame

UAPD officers responded to the Pueblo de la Cienega Residence Hall on Nov. 6 at 12:57 a.m. in reference to a report of an unwanted man on the premises.

Upon arrival, officers met with a female resident who appeared to have been crying. She told police that she had been having problems with her ex-boyfriend.

She said that earlier, she had left her sorority with some friends and was going to Highland Market to get something to eat. She then received a phone call from her ex-boyfriend, who told her that he was on his way to her sorority house to see her because he wanted to talk.

She told the man that she was not at her sorority house and that she did not wish to speak to him. During her walk to Highland Market, she saw the man drive around in the area. The women sat down to eat at Highland Market and the ex-boyfriend appeared outside. He began knocking on the window to get her attention, but she refused to acknowledge him. After the man began to pound on the window, the woman went outside to tell him to leave the area. During her contact with him, she noticed that he was wearing an object that she recognized as hers and was supposed to be in her room.

She went back to her room with her friends and the ex-boyfriend appeared there as well. When the woman’s friends went outside to tell the man to leave, he entered the dorm room. The woman told him she was going to call the police and he left the area on a bicycle.

The woman told police it had been over two years since she had broken up with the man, and although she had not felt threatened, she wanted to document the incident.
