Arizona hockey upsets No. 11 Illinois on the road

The No. 19 Arizona hockey team (3-2-0) beat No. 11 Illinois (7-1-2) 3-2 in an overtime shoot out on Friday.

Arizona started its game at Illinois four on four and then after a four on four overtime secured the road upset in the shoot out.

Senior forward Brian Slugocki and freshman forward Mike Adamowicz scored goals in the three man shoot out and after two saves by junior goalie Steven Sisler, there was no need for a third UA shooter.

“It’s good to see the team battle back and finally beat a ranked team,” Slugocki said.
Though UA head coach Sean Hogan coached in the Midwest at Oakland in Michigan, this is his first win at Illinois.

“It was a good win for us for sure,” Hogan said.

The Illini struck first, scoring on a five on three power play in the first period. Adamowicz tied it up midway through the second with a goal.

“Mike Adamowicz played really well, he just out worked, out hustled guys all night long,” Hogan said.
Junior forward Andrew Murmes gave the Wildcats a 2-1 lead early in the third off of a Slugocki assist but Illinois tied it with 2:30 to go.

“It was certainly an exciting game, it had its ups and downs, I would say it’s one of the better games I’ve been a part of here,” Slugocki said.
Arizona killed off two five minute penalties.

“It’s a good win and we are excited about that, but there is still room for improvement for sure,” Hogan said.

The game started with four on four and then ended with it.

Before the game, both teams were assessed a two minute penalty for being late and they started four against four.

“It wasn’t really our fault, they didn’t ask what time they wanted us to come out,” Hogan said.

Then after ending regulation tied, the Wildcats and Illini played five minutes of four on four overtime.

The teams play again Saturday night at 5:30 p.m.
