Greek Life members strike a pose at the Up ‘til Dawn finale event last year during Greek Week.

The UA’s “Greek Weekend” will celebrate and unify the Greek community during the first weekend of April.

All of greek life is excited for the events, said Jeremy Zilmer, the UA’s fraternity and sorority programs coordinator, in an email. The events kick off with a banner competition on April 1 and end on April 7 with a fundraising event for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital called Up ‘til Dawn.

Groups of four will compete in Greek Sing, Greek Olympics and the Knowledge Bowl to win points.
The team with the most points will be announced in a ceremony on Sunday, and the champions will receive a trophy.

“It’s really about bringing a community together,” said Danielle Hannon, Greek Weekend chair and member of Delta Gamma sorority. “I think Greek Week is definitely a way to break chapters out of their comfort zone and mix them with chapters they may not necessarily be familiar with and learn their history. This week is about unifying the Greek community and bringing us together to support each other in every aspect and get close as a community.”

The Greek Sing event will take place on April 5 in Centennial Hall at 6 p.m., where individual chapters will perform to showcase their sorority or fraternity.

The next day, April 6, the Greek Olympics will take place on the UA MAll. The Knowledge Bowl will be held in the Social Sciences building later that day, at 5:30 p.m. Teams will be quizzed on on Ancient Greek history, Greek history and UA Greek history. Teams will advance through their bracket by answering questions correctly.

“I’m excited for all the chapter members to compete for one common goal,” said Lexi Shinn, Greek Sing co-chair and member of Chi Omega sorority. “I think so many times [chapters] consider themselves one individual unit. I’m excited to come together as a closer community rather than individual chapters.”

Members of greek life have expressed excitement about the fact that all the events have been collaborated on and organized so that all greek life members can participate and bond with each other.

“I’m most excited about getting to know other sorority and fraternity members that I haven’t gotten the chance to know that well,” said Doug Lostus, co-competition chair and member of Pi Kappa Alpha. “Usually you are just separated [from other Greek Life members], but now we get to come together.”
