Sigma Alpha Mu’s “Field of Dreams” isn’t just another sorority competition

Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity will hold its first official philanthropy event, “Field of Dreams,” on April 28. Field of Dreams, a five-day softball tournament and fundraiser, allows for the 11 sorority organizations to show off their athletic talents in a friendly competition.

Sigma Alpha Mu’s event will raise money for its national charity, The Judy Fund, which is part of the Alzheimer’s Association.
“The Judy Fund was actually created by a Sigma Alpha Mu whose wife passed away from Alzheimer’s disease,” said Karmi Gutman, Sigma Alpha Mu philanthropy chair.

“We wanted to host our first philanthropy event because as a chapter we feel that the first step in becoming recognized and respected on campus is by having a fun and successful philanthropy event,” Gutman said.

Sigma Alpha Mu members are seeking more recognition and are trying to show they are a “fraternity of gentlemen” who won’t request women wear revealing outfits or participate in sexist activities, Gutman added. The fraternity already has an intramural softball team with several sorority girls so Guzman thought including more sororities would be a fun alternative. Sophomore and member of Chi Omega sorority Samantha Capaldi is one of the many participants in the upcoming game.

“The [Sigma Alpha Mu] boys are not your typical frat guys, considering how genuine and down-to-earth they are. I can’t wait to participate in their philanthropy [event] and it will be an awesome day playing softball with my sisters,” she said.

Be sure to sign up as soon as possible to get your team on the “Field of Dreams” roster.
