FINAL: Arizona wins 69-60 at San Diego State

No. 6 Arizona basketball defeated San Diego State, 69-60 in the Wildcats’ first road game of the season.

At the first media timeout of the second half, Arizona (3-0) clung to a 12-point lead over the Aztecs. The UA saw only two players compile double-digits after seeing six accomplish the feat last game.

Junior guard Nick Johnson and freshman forward Aaron Gordon combined to account for 39 of Arizona’s 69 points.

Johnson led the team with a game-high 23 points. Johnson converted 8-of-15 field goal attempts and added four rebounds, two blocks, and an assist.

Gordon finished the night with 16 points, eight rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and three steals.

The Wildcats found themselves in real foul trouble for the first time this season, and five minutes into the second period, found key cogs Brandon Ashley, Johnson, and Gordon with three fouls apiece.

With 13 minutes remaining, four of the five Wildcats on the court had three fouls with Ashley on the sideline, just one away from fouling out for the second consecutive game.

At the last media time out, Arizona was only up by seven as the Aztecs refused to go down quietly. San Diego State attempted to close the gap and found themselves down by just four with 1:22 remaining, but failed to rally past the surging Wildcats as Gordon put the difference back to six after completing an alley-oop off the inbound pass.

Freshman forward Rondae Hollis-Jefferson finished with his first collegiate road performance with seven points, five rebounds, and an assist.

Sophomore center Kaleb Tarczewski compiled four points in the half and six overall to go along with six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.

Hollis-Jefferson fouled out and Gordon, Johnson, Ashley and Tarczewski finished with four fouls. Arizona had 24 fouls in the game, while the Aztecs committed 17.
