FLAGSTAFF — The Arizona Board of Regents voted to approve performance incentives for UA President Ann Weaver Hart and other Arizona university presidents during the last day of its meeting at Northern Arizona University on Friday.
The performance incentives, which total $40,000, were given to Hart for accomplishments she made at the UA made during the past 2013-14 academic year. Among these accomplishments is the proposed acquisition of the University of Arizona Health Network by Banner Health, which received the regents’ approval to move forward in June.
Hart was also assigned performance incentives for the next academic year. Next year, Hart could receive up to $170,000 in bonuses for meeting goals related to meeting the regents’ 2020 plan.
Arizona State University President Michael Crow, former NAU President John Haeger and Eileen Klein, president of the board of regents, received performance incentives as well on Friday. The regents also approved a 20 percent pay increase for Crow, whose pay had not been adjusted since 2007.
Haeger was awarded the Regents Medal in recognition of his service at NAU on Thursday.
“We are definitely out on the edge of the rest of public institutions and it’s a reflection of good management and leadership,” said Mark Killian, chairman of the board of regents, on the performance incentives.
The regents did not hold public discussion at Friday’s meeting before voting on the performance incentives for each of the presidents.
Regent Greg Patterson said the board of regents spent time meeting with the presidents privately to talk about the goals the regents want them to meet. He added that there is a “tremendous” amount of work at the regents’ level going behind the performance incentives.
“I just wanted to make sure that people understood that these bonus incentives are carefully crafted, they’re important, they mean things, that we spend a lot of time with them, and that our presidents are on track,” he said.
