Police Beat: January 20, 2015

Wrong place for the second time

A non-UA-affiliated individual was arrested on Jan. 9 after being found lingering among the bike racks on the west side of the Steward Observatory.

A University of Arizona Police Department officer responded to the call after a UAPD police aide had seen a man walking around the area.

When the officer approached, the man said, “I’m not doing anything wrong.”

The officer then asked for identification and realized that the man already had an active warrant with UAPD until June 2015 for trespassing.

When the officer asked the man why he was on campus, he said he needed to get care from the University of Arizona Medical Center for a cyst on his chest.

He began pulling up his shirt to show the officer the cyst; however, the officer did not notice any physical problems.

The man told the officer he was aware of his exclusionary order, but he did not think walking through campus was a direct violation of the order.

When the officer was searching the man, he found two marijuana pipes, a napkin with marijuana in it and three credit cards with different names on them.

The individual was arrested for trespassing and was booked into Pima County Jail.

Just arrest me already

A non-UA-affiliated individual was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol on Jan. 10.

A UAPD officer was driving toward the intersection of Speedway Boulevard and Third Avenue when he noticed a vehicle swerving in and out of lanes and going 45 mph in a 35 mph zone.

The officer made contact with the driver and asked him to show his identification, vehicle registration and insurance.

The officer noticed that the driver had bloodshot eyes and slurred speech, and the officer asked the driver if he had been drinking.

The man replied, “No, I’m the drunk driver.”

After running the man’s information, the officer noticed that he was under the legal age of 21 and asked him to step out of the car.

When the man exited the car, the officer noticed that he had trouble walking straight and was swaying back and forth before eventually falling.

The officer attempted to do more sobriety tests on the individual. However, he was unable to complete them and said to the officer, “Fuck, man. Just arrest me. I’m a fucking idiot. I drove drunk, and I shouldn’t have. Just arrest me already.”

When the officer took the man to the station for breath samples, the individual said he would like to have his blood drawn instead of using a breath sample.

While the officer was looking for a phlebotomist, the individual got sick and vomited in a nearby trash can, passed out and was unresponsive.

The officer called Tucson Fire Department to evaluate the individual.

TFD determined that the man did not need medical attention, and he was taken to Pima County Jail where he was booked for driving under the influence.
