The Los Angeles Athletic Club announced on Wednesday that Arizona men’s basketball forward Stanley Johnson is a member of the inaugural John R. Wooden Award Late Season Top 20.
The list is a new addition to further cut down the list for national player of the year from last month’s mid-season top 25, which Johnson was also on. The freshman is one of four freshmen and three Pac-12 Conference players on the list.
Johnson leads the Wildcats in scoring (14.6 points per game) and rebounding (six per game) and is one of just two freshmen in major college basketball conferences, along with Jahlil Okafor of Duke, to average at least six rebounds and 14 points per game.
Johnson is 12th in the Pac-12 in scoring and is second among freshmen. He is also seventh in the league in steals, with 1.5 per game.
The Fullerton, Calif., native is third in the nation for freshman free-throw attempts at 134, which is the all-time 10th-most by a UA rookie.
Johnson has led the Wildcats in scoring 12 times and rebounding on nine occasions and, in 23 games, has scored in double-figures 20 times. He was named MVP of the EA Sports Maui Invitational in November.
Johnson is seeking his third Wooden award, as in 2013 and 2014, he won the John R. Wooden Award for California Division I High School Player of the Year.
