Arizona women’s basketball was swept on the road this weekend by Oregon and Oregon State. The two losses drop the Wildcats to 9-16 overall and 2-12 in Pac-12 Conference play.

Arizona traveled to Corvallis on Sunday afternoon where it fell 73-48 to No. 8 Oregon State.

The story of the game was found on the glass, where the Beavers out-rebounded the UA 48-22. No Wildcat player had more than four boards.

Arizona, nonetheless, kept the game competitive in the first half with the deficit never reaching double digits until 6:40 remained.

Oregon State opened up on a 12-4 run to solidify the lead in the second half. The Beavers also started to lock down defensively, holding Arizona to under 22 percent from the field in the half.

Arizona forwards LaBrittney Jones and Alli Gloyd each scored a team-high 10 points to lead the UA offensively. Meanwhile, Arizona guard Candice Warthen’s nine points moved her to No. 16 on the school’s all-time scoring list.

Arizona couldn’t do enough to slow down Oregon State on defense. The Beavers shot 48 percent for the game, including seven 3-pointers from guard Sydney Wiese, who scored a game-high 20 points.

The Wildcats once again took care of the ball by committing only eight turnovers while forcing 15 from Oregon State. Warthen led the team with three steals.

After getting off to a quick start on Friday, Arizona fell behind and never recovered in a 75-61 loss to Oregon.

Jones came off the bench to lead the UA in scoring with 14 points, while Arizona guard Keyahndra Cannon added 12 points. Gloyd was the leading rebounder with seven boards and also added eight points of her own.

The Wildcats aggressively attacked the paint in the early going and led 19-11 with under 12 minutes to go in the first half. However, Oregon ended the half on a 23-8 run to go up by seven points at the break.

The Ducks quickly grabbed control of the game in the second half as the lead expanded to 20 points with 15 minutes to go. Arizona made a late run to cut into the deficit, but the hole was far too deep to dig out of.

Oregon forward Jillian Alleyne led her team with a dominant 19 point and 17 rebound double-double. Alleyne’s efforts on the glass were a main reason why the Wildcats got out-rebounded 41-34.

The Ducks also shot the ball with precision, making 49 percent of their attempts, including 10 3-pointers. Arizona, meanwhile, was held to 2-9 from the outside and shot 38 percent overall.

Warthen has usually been the Wildcats’ top scoring threat this season but was held to a 2-13 outing. 

Warthen, however, did have a team-high four assists.

If there was a positive for Arizona in the loss, it was the turnover battle. The Wildcats committed a season-low seven miscues, while Oregon was forced into 14 turnovers.

The Wildcats continue their road trip this coming week as they travel to southern California to play USC and UCLA.
