Arizona volleyball falls in four sets to Colorado, drops third straight

Arizona volleyball fell in four sets to Colorado, playing its first home game in McKale Center in three weeks. This is the Wildcats’ third loss in a row as their record in Pac-12 Conference play has fallen to 3-6.

The Wildcats were competitive in the first two sets but we were not even close to Colorado in third and fourth sets.

The Wildcats gave up four points in a row in a close first set when they were down 21-20 and allowed Colorado to take the set.

Arizona got off to a fast start in the second set, taking a 10-5 lead. Colorado slowly trimmed down the lead, eventually tying the set at 23-23 and 24-24.

One of the positives from tonight’s game was the performance by freshman Tyler Spriggs. With the score tied at 24-24, Spriggs came up with a huge kill to give her team the lead. This put the team in position to win the set as they claimed the next point.

“You’ve got to make big plays at the end, and I was able to do that” Spriggs said. “It was nice to get it done.”

Arizona looked to have taken the momentum in the match, but fell apart in the third and fourth sets, losing them 25-15 and 25-14. Arizona volleyball head coach Dave Rubio said one of the main problems was the amount of attacking errors his team made. He also felt his team was out of sync and executed very poorly.

“[Our] 42 attacking errors in one game has got to be a record,” Rubio said. “Obviously we weren’t ready to play and that’s my fault.”

Rubio also thinks that a lot of players still aren’t prepared for the high level of play in the Pac-12 presents day after day. He has noticed a lot of his first year players performing well in practice, but struggling to transfer that over to the games.

After the disappointment, the Wildcats will have an opportunity on Sunday to snap their three game losing streak and to get out of their slump against Utah.

Utah is 7-13, and just 1-8 in Pac-12 play.
