Arizona women’s golf opens season with second place finish in Annika tournament

The Arizona women’s golf team took home second place this week in the Annika Intercollegiate golf tournament.

The Wildcats finished with an overall team score of 851 (-13) for the tournament. The USC Trojans were the only team with a lower total than the Wildcats and came in first with a total team score of 828 (-36).

The Wildcats made surges up the leaderboard each day, finishing in sixth place on Sunday, third place on Monday and finally coming in second place overall when the tournament ended Tuesday.

Strong individual play helped the Wildcats climb the leaderboard throughout the tournament. Four players finished in the top 20 and two cracked the top 10.

Senior Lindsey Weaver had a strong start to her season with a ninth place finish. She had a consistent three rounds with scores of 70-71-70=211 (-5) and was never above par after the first hole on the final round Tuesday.

Junior Wanasa Zhou tied Weaver for ninth with a tournament score of 70-67-74=211 (-5). Zhou had an impressive six birdie performance in the second round Monday.

Other top performers for the Wildcats included sophomore Krystal Quihuis who tied for 19th with a strong performance shooting 73-71-71=215 (-1).

A positive sign for the Wildcats this weekend came from freshman Gigi Stoll, who placed 16th in her first collegiate tournament. Stoll shot a 69 in her first collegiate round and followed that with a 72-73 on Monday and Tuesday to earn her a top-20 finish.

“Gigi had an amazing first tournament,” Arizona women’s head coach Laura Ianello said. ”She was very happy with her results. Her putting was spectacular.”

The Wildcats’ next tournament is Oct. 5-6, where they compete in the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Evanston, Illinois.
