In this week’s Wildcat Roundup, Arizona tennis was rained out, but women’s softball had a pretty good weekend.

Bad weather strikes Arizona women’s tennis

Arizona women’s tennis had poor luck with the weather over the weekend, as both their Friday and Saturday matches were cancelled due to rain. The Wildcats will face UCLA on Sunday, April 10 according to a press release. Arizona also had their match against USC rained out.

Arizona softball cruises to victory over Houston

Game 1

In game one of the doubleheader against Houston, the No. 18 Arizona softball team run-ruled the Cougars 11-2.

Taylor McQuillin pitched a gem, throwing four innings and just allowing four hits. She also added three strikeouts. Michelle Floyd came in to close the game out, not giving up a hit in one inning of work.

Katiyana Mauga made waves in game one, hitting her 60th career home run. She is just the sixth Arizona player to do so in program history.

Tamara Statman had herself a day as well, going 3-for-3, a career high. Statman also added a homerun of her own. Leadoff hitter Mandie Perez went 2-for-4 at the plate.

The Wildcats’ hitting was just too much for Houston starting pitcher Presley Bell to handle, as she gave up four runs on three hits and didn’t get one batter out. Shelby Miller came into replace Bell, throwing 3.1 innings and giving up five runs on seven hits.

Game 2

In game two of the doubleheader, Arizona defeated Houston once again but this time cut it close in the top of the seventh.

Nancy Bowling started on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings and giving up four runs on three hits. Only one of the runs was earned.

Danielle O’Toole came in the game to finish off the Cougars, pitching 3.1 innings and giving up only three hits. O’Toole did cut it close as base runners were on second and third, before Houston grounded out to end the game.

Mauga had another gem of a game, going 3-for-4 and adding three RBI’s and one homerun. Alexis Dotson went 1-for-3 but did add a homerun herself and two RBI’s.

The Wildcats will face Stanford next weekend on the road. First pitch will be Friday, April 15 at 5 p.m.
