Arizona women’s basketball coach Adia Barnes signals at Charise Holloway to step in during Arizona’s 74-59 win against Alcorn State on Sunday, Nov. 13 at McKale Center.

Malena Washington scored 17 points and Breanna Workman added 12, but it wasn’t nearly enough as the Arizona women’s basketball team was defeated by Kansas 75-51 on Saturday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kansas.

The loss snaps Arizona’s five-game winning streak and drops its record to 7-2 on the season.

The Jayhawks outscored the Wildcats 16-6 in the first quarter and never looked back. Kansas took a 34-20 lead at halftime and led by double digits throughout the entire second half, extending their lead to as many as 26 points at one point.

Jessica Washington led the Jayhawks in scoring, dropping 16 points on 6-11 shooting, while McKenzie Calbert sank three 3s and finished with 14 points. Kansas shot 47 percent from the field and 7-21 from 3, while the Wildcats’ offense scuffled.

Arizona shot just 30.8 percent and 1-13 from behind the arc. It also had just seven assists to 15 turnovers.

Despite Workman’s dozen points, the Jayhawks held a 36-18 edge in points in the paint and had 38 bench points, as ten different players made their mark in the scoring column.

The Wildcats trailed 54-35 heading into the fourth quarter, but Malena Washington started off the period with a personal 8-0 run to cut KU’s lead to 11 with 7:14 left in regulation.

However, Arizona did not get closer than that, as the Jayhawks immediately responded with a 13-4 run and wound up winning comfortably on their home court.

The victory improves Kansas’ record to 5-5 on the season.

The Wildcats return to action Wednesday when they host Utah State, the penultimate non-conference game on their schedule.

Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
