Five UA events to get your science fix

Many members of the university community may find themselves feeling overwhelmed by their new classes after winter break. To ease into the new semester, students may want to stop by some events designed to promote education and conversation within the sciences. Below is a list of upcoming science-geared events.

A Campus Conversation on Sustainability – Jan. 17, 1-5 p.m. in Room S107 of ENR2

 Organized by the UA’s Office of Sustainability, A Campus Conversation on Sustainability is a conference where students, faculty, and administration will come together to learn about how sustainability and climate issues relate to UA. There will be an open discussion afterwards for attendees to exchange ideas with others. To RSVP or to learn more about this event, head here

Tech Launch Arizona: Made it Happen – Jan. 26, noon- 1 p.m. in the Ventana Room of SUMC

The Tech Launch Arizona: Made it Happen event gives UA researchers the opportunity to share their inventions with the university and the community. The event focuses on inventions that have made it to market and educates about the importance of investment. Abe Jalbout, CEO of UA startups MetOxs Electrochemical and Caltrode is attending as a speaker. To register, go here.

The Art of Planetary Science – Feb. 10, 5-9 p.m. in Gerard P. Kuiper Space Sciences Building

A blend of art and science, this exhibition features artwork created using actual data from our solar system. Anyone is welcome to participate. There is a special musical performance by UA student Spencer Miller inspired by the natural universe at 7 p.m. For anyone too busy studying for their new classes on Friday, there will be art showings Saturday and Sunday from 1-5 p.m. as well. Annual Conference on Successful Aging – Feb. 15, 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in North Ballroom of SUMC

Scientists have been working on ways to slow down or even reverse the aging process over the last few years, but that doesn’t necessarily mean aging is a bad thing. In this long-running conference, attendees can learn about positive decision making as they grow older. Some topics are “Avoiding Scams and Frauds” and “Making Sound Financial Decisions.” To register and for more information on topics, go here.

“Feeding Your Genome” Conference – Feb. 22-24 in ENR2 Building  and SUMC

The theme for this year’s Research Frontiers in Nutritional Sciences Conference is “Feeding Your Genome.” Talks and classes will focus on personalized health and nutrition. The conference is geared toward those interested in the health profession, whether that be in education, medicine or another area. The event is also celebrating Tucson’s designation as a “City of Gastronomy” by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization. Students are encouraged to submit their work to compete for best presentation. More information can be found at here.

Anniversary Celebration for the UA Health Sciences  - Feb. 23, 4-7 p.m. at Biomedical Sciences Partnership Building in Phoenix

Everyone is invited to a night of celebration of the UA Health Sciences Department history and successes. Some of the achievements include 60 years of the College of Nursing and 40 years of the UA Cancer Center. UA President Ann Weaver Hart and Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton will be in attendance to offer their congratulations. More information can be found here.
