After a two week break to recover from their first loss of the season, the 6-1 Women’s Tennis team returned to Tucson to play New Mexico and Cincinnati. The Wildcats bounced back to avoid back to back losses by defeating New Mexico 4-0, and then used their momentum to fuel another victory against Cincinnati.

The team used two back to back doubles wins to put them on top early against New Mexico. Freshman Paris Corley and senior Lauren Marker won their game 6-0 while junior Devin Chypyha and sophomore Camilla Wesbrooks also shut out their opponents 6-0, giving Arizona a quick 1-0 lead to begin the day.

“I was really proud of us in the doubles,” said Marker after the consecutive wins. “We’ve been struggling with it a lot lately. We’re just pretty much working on being aggressive at the net and setting each other up from the baseline, and I think we did a good job of that today.”

Wesbrooks (6-3, 6-1), Chypyha (6-2, 6-0) and Corley (6-1, 6-3) wrapped up the match for Arizona with wins in the singles, as Arizona moved to 7-1 for the season.

Arizona immediately turned their attention to Cincinnati after their win, and quickly won the doubles matches (6-1, 6-3) to give themselves another 1-0 lead. Once again, Arizona used their momentum from the doubles victories to make fast work of Cincinnati in the singles. Arizona won the game 5-0 with singles victories from Marker (6-3, 6-1), Corley (6-3, 7-6), Chypyha (6-4, 6-1), and Wesbrooks (6-3, 6-0).

“You have more momentum going into the singles when you have the doubles point on your side,” Marker said. “But we have lost it quite a few times this season, and we’ve bounced back. We’re pretty strong on all 6 courts on singles.”

Arizona moved to 8-1 with two home wins. Up next for the team is a trip to Denton on Saturday, March 4.,to play North Texas.
