What’s new to Netflix in May

Whats new to Netflix in May
Sam Gross

May has almost arrived, if you can believe it. It’s the time of year when continuing students rejoice over summer break while those about to graduate begin their existential crises over what to do with the rest of their lives. Luckily for those souls, Netflix will unleash a wide variety of new content during May, giving us students a little bit more time to decide what we want to spend the rest of our lives doing. Our plans for the future can wait until after at least one more episode, right?

Netflix continues its now undeniably impressive plethora of original series, and this month we will get brand new seasons from some of Netflix’s best and most popular shows. It will become tough to leave the screen this month.

On May 12, Aziz Ansari will make a welcome return to the streaming platform with season two of his comedy series “Master of None.” The series is a hilariously well-written comedy starring Ansari as Dev, an actor based in New York. The first season of the series, which Ansari co-created, was smart, clever and hilarious, so hopefully Ansari can deliver another successful round of “Master of None” mayhem.

May 19 will make way for a new season of another successful Netflix comedy series when season three of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” becomes available. The series stars Ellie Kemper as a woman who was locked underground by a mysterious cult leader for most of her life. She is suddenly set free, and the series explores her experience of trying to adjust to life in the city. This may sound dark, but it does not come across that way while watching it. Schmidt’s unbreakable spirit make her a funny pleasure to watch on screen. Seasons one and two both delivered nonstop laughs, so let’s cross our fingers and hope season three can provide the same.

At the end of the month, viewers will get the treat of what might be the most highly anticipated release of the month. Season five of veteran Netflix series “House of Cards” will begin streaming May 30, giving viewers the chance to once again take a look at the corrupt political world of Francis Underwood (Kevin Spacey). Underwood has lied and even murdered to claw his way to the top of the American political system during earlier seasons, so let’s see what he has up his sleeve this time around. It also might make you feel old to know that Netflix has been producing original content long enough to give a show a fifth season.

Netflix will also treat viewers to new seasons of “Chelsea” and “Sense8” on May 5, and a new season of family drama “Bloodline” on May 26. If you somehow plow through all of that content, take a look at some of the notable movies hitting the site. Yes, Netflix still has movies, not just TV shows. Catch the critically acclaimed comedy “Don’t Think Twice,” Marvel film “Doctor Strange” and drama “The Place Beyond the Pines” when they become available throughout the month.

Netflix may lead the race, but let’s not forget about some of the other competitors in the online streaming world. On Hulu, viewers will get a chance to watch films like “Bad Moms” and “Big Fish” while also streaming shows like season three of Hulu original series “Casual.” James Bond fans may also find solace with classic Bond outings such as “Tomorrow Never Dies, “A View to a Kill” and “Moonraker,” among others.

On Amazon Prime, treat yourself to shows like “Vikings” or “Boardwalk Empire,” or to movies like “Sucker Punch” or “Planes, Trains and Automobiles.”

Regardless of your streaming service, you should have no problem finding something to watch in May. A complete list of the newly available content that will become available in May can be found online. With finals just around the corner and existential crises of graduation looming, you may need to take a break and relax with some binge watching.

Just remember to please stream responsibly.
