This year, Spring Fling will have 29 rides, 16 original booths, 11 game booths and five commercial food booths. With approximately 30,000 people attending the event each year and different ticket options varying from $5 to $30, there is a lot of money that will be going around.
So, what happens with all of the money?
Josler Tudisco, the Spring Fling marketing directory, said, “The money goes back into the organizations that help put on the event.”
With Spring Fling being back on campus for the last five years, clubs make three times more than they used to when it was located at Rilito Downs, on First Avenue. Last year’s pay off was $78,000 to all of the clubs.
The overall budget for the event is $190,000 and is allocated between the eight event directors. Tudisco’s marketing department receives $30,000 of the budget, but the bulk of the money goes to the field operations director, who will organize booking the mall, bringing in the rides, etc.
The event is sponsored by 15 organizations who help offset some non-operational costs with the likes of food donations, shirts, and more.
Tudisco said that they are expecting to do well this year with the implementation of new marketing strategies. He said Spring Fling is unique in the way that it attracts college students just by being conveniently location on campus.
So, this year they have reached out more to younger families in the Tucson area. Strategies included billboards, TV commercials and advertisements occurring before movie previews at the theaters.
