Tommy Lloyd makes his first appearance as the head coach of Men’s Basketball in McKale Center.  Lloyd left his assistant coaching job at Gonzaga to run the program at the University of Arizona.

Newly hired head coach Tommy Lloyd lands his first recruit just one day after being named the Arizona men’s basketball head coach.

Four-star center, Dylan Anderson, from Perry High School in Gilbert, Arizona, announced to social media Friday morning, April 16, that he is committed to the Wildcats.

Anderson is ranked as the No. 42 best player in his class according to ESPN, and the No. 47 best recruit according to 247sports. 247sports also ranks him as the No. 7 best center in the 2022 class and No. 2 in the state of Arizona.

Anderson chose Arizona over Gonzaga, North Carolina, Michigan and Arizona State. He stands at 7-feet tall, 215 pounds and is a “do it all” big man, who can shoot the ball, post up and rebound at a high level. Anderson is a very skilled big man and if he gets stronger, he could be dominant for Llyod come 2022.

Lloyd said yesterday, at his introductory press conference, that he wants to look for high character players and doesn’t want to be just looked at as an international recruiter.

“When I think about recruiting, I also think about my job is to get the best fit, highest character, most talented guy for our team,” Lloyd said on Thursday, April 15. “You always have to have that formula and whether that’s an international guy, a transfer, a junior college kid, I don’t know. We’re going to fish in all waters, trust me and when we’re going to find the best kids for the University of Arizona, no matter if they have a name you can’t pronounce, or they’re a kid down the street.”

The Wildcats have yet to find a true star center after Deandre Ayton’s short stay on campus in 2018, so time will tell if Anderson can fill those shoes.
