On day two of the Arizona Desert State Classic, the Arizona soccer team got the win against California State University, Northridge in Tempe, Arizona. The final score was 3-2 gaining their first road win of the season.
The Wildcats came ready to bounce back after a loss against Lousiana State University (2-0) last Thursday.
The Wildcats shot 21 goals with 17 of those going on target. The Wildcats started quick. At the 11th minute, Jill Aguilera scored the first goal assisted by Gianna Christiansen, and just under one minute later, Desiree Foster scored the second goal assisted by Jordan Hall.
Aguilera, a redshirt senior, guaranteed her spot in third place for career goals in the program’s history with 26 goals. Aguilera scored the game’s first and winning goals at the 11th minute and 35th minute. Her 35th minute goal secured her first brace of the season.
Aguilera, who was a 2021 NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, was questioning returning after a shortened 2020-21 season. Her decision to stay has made her a sixth-year senior, and a leader on the newly coached soccer team.
CSUN got on the scoreboard at the 28th minute with a goal by Sydney Gilbert assisted by Cindy Arteaga, but still trailed UA 3-1 at halftime.
The Wildcats faced yellow cards on Mariah Dunn and Aguilera in the second half.
Although the game was won at the 35th minute with Aguilera’s goal, the CSUN ladies continued to take shots and delivered 70% of their shots on target. Their second goal was scored off of a free kick at the 50th minute.
The Cats are bringing the winning energy back to Tucson to the women’s next game. The team will host Texas Tech on Thursday, Sept. 9, 2021 at 7 p.m. MST.
