Arizona women's tennis sweeps Cal Poly and GCU in weekend doubleheader

University of Arizona's Midori Castillo-Meza celebrates a point in a match against Grand Canyon University at Robson Tennis Center on Jan 22. The Wildcats went on to win the match 4-0. 

The Arizona women's tennis team beat California Polytechnic State University and Grand Canyon University in a doubleheader to start the season off with a bang. Both games were held at the University of Arizona on Sunday, Jan. 22.

The Wildcats beat Cal Poly to start 6-1. Arizona doubles pairs Parker Fry and Salma Ziouti along with Reece Carter and Kayla Wilkins won their matches. Arizona quickly went up, winning the doubles point making it 1-0. 

Carter and Ziouti were the first two singles matches to put up a win thanks to quick starts, winning the first set 6-1. Ziouti finished first, winning her match with 6-1 and 6-3 finishes. Following that, Carter — a freshman — earned her first college dual match putting up a pair of crushing 6-1 victories. To clinch the match, Kayla Wilkins won 6-4 and 6-0. Arizona finished the match with wins from Midori Castillo-Meza and Tanvi Narendran. 

In the second matchup of the weekend, Arizona swept GCU 4-0. The Arizona doubles pairs Castillo-Meza and Ziouti, along with Carter and Wilkins, both won their matches 6-3 to secure another Arizona doubles point, making it 1-0. Fry, Carter and Narendran were the first three to win, finishing the match 4-0.
