The Arizona women’s tennis team defeated California State University, Fresno 4-2 on Friday, Feb. 3, at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center after a singles sweep retaliation.
To start off the three-game weekend, the Wildcats took the court with the opponent Bulldogs at 3 p.m.
The afternoon challenge began with UA’s Salma Ziouti and Parker Fry, who were overthrown 6-0 by Fresno’s Pang Jittakoat and Matilde Magrini in the doubles competition.
To even out the score, Wildcats Midori Castillo-Meza and Belen Nevenhoven were able to win 6-3 against Mariia Vyshkina and Meshkatolzahra Safi on court two. Unfortunately, it was not enough to come back in the doubles after the Fresno State pair Carolina Piferi and Carlotta Marzano-Nonnis defeated Kayla Wilkins and Reece Carter 6-3 in the third match.

Despite the Bulldogs taking the victory in doubles, singles play was a different story — the Wildcats won in straight sets. Carter initiated the singles and leveled the overall score after beating opponent Cristina Flaquer 6-2, 6-3.
Next on the court was Wilkins, who steered Arizona’s leverage in the right direction after defeating Safi 6-1, 6-4 and taking the lead.
To complete the sweep, Fry secured the final win in the singles match with a 6-1, 6-3 win against Vyshkina, finalizing the score of the game at 4-2 in Arizona’s favor and making their record 4-1 overall.
The weekend continued with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 4, against Florida Atlantic University and NAU.
