As Arizona’s baseball team geared up for its first official fall practice, its thoughts and prayers were with head coach Andy Lopez, who underwent triple bypass heart surgery Monday at a local hospital.
The 59-year-old three-time national coach of the year is being held in the intensive care unit following the operation and has, along with the rest of the Lopez family, expressed appreciation for the outpouring of support received in recent days but requested privacy and respectfully asked for no visitors at the hospital.
“We are all thrilled to hear that Andy’s surgery went well,” Athletics Director Greg Byrne said in a press release. “He is receiving great care from the medical team and we all wish him a complete and speedy recovery. Our thoughts and prayers go out to him and his family as he begins the recovery process.”
After he is cleared by doctors, Lopez is expected to return to the team and manage the program in his 13th season since taking the helm at Arizona.
